Abstract

Debt and credit constitute an important aspect of the economic life of communities and often give rise to social problems when they are not properly regulated. The Qur’an provides detailed guidance on this matter, particularly in QS. al-Baqarah: 282, which is known as the longest verse and contains principles of justice, documentation, and the protection of the rights of both parties. This study aims to examine the concept of debt and credit in the Qur’an through a comparative study of Tafsir al-Maraghi by Ahmad Mustafa al-Maraghi and Tafsir al-Azhar by Buya Hamka. The research employs a library-based method with a thematic (maudhu‘i) tafsir approach, enabling an analysis of the similarities and differences in the interpretations of the two exegetes. The findings show that both scholars emphasize the importance of justice and proper documentation in debt transactions; however, al-Maraghi places greater emphasis on legal aspects and social welfare within the context of early twentieth-century Egyptian society, while Buya Hamka highlights moral and ethical dimensions and their relevance to the socio-cultural conditions of Indonesia. Thus, this study affirms that the principles of debt and credit in the Qur’an are universal, while remaining adaptable to the dynamics of communities across time and space
