Abstract

This research aims to profoundly examine the significance of the prohibition against uttering the word "uff" as a benchmark of piety and devotion to both parents, as explicitly stated in Surah Al-Isra' (17) verse 23. In Islam, filial piety is equated with the command of tawhid (Oneness of God), establishing it as a fundamental moral principle. The method employed is a qualitative descriptive semantic study , utilizing primary data in the form of Qur'anic verses and supported by secondary data (exegesis books such as Tafsir Al-Misbah, Ibnu Katsir, and Al-Qurtubi). The semantic analysis is applied to analyze the development and expansion of the key words' meanings within the verse. The findings indicate that the literal meaning of the word "uff" is an expression of grumbling, annoyance, or resentment , and it is even interpreted as "everything that is dirty and worthless". However, within the context of Al-Isra' verse 23, the word "uff" functions as the lowest threshold of speech that is strictly forbidden and can hurt the parents' feelings. This prohibition is not limited to saying "ah" or "cis" , but encompasses all forms of speech, action, or even the smallest attitude, including a head shake or a sullen face, which shows displeasure or disobedience ('uquq al-walidain). The emphasis on this prohibition becomes crucial when parents enter old age (al-kibar) , a time when the child's patience is tested and both parents require extra attention. The verse instructs children not to scold or rebuke (walā tanharhumā) and always to utter a noble word (qaulan karīman) , which means speaking softly, politely, and with full respect. In conclusion, the prohibition of "uff" is the minimum ethical boundary that must be adhered to; failure to restrain this lowest form of utterance indicates the potential for greater acts of disobedience.
